Difference Across All Content Areas

Guided reading has been an instrumental part of my classroom routine for the last two years.  As a looping, self-contained teacher, it has made a world of difference across all content areas. I began my teaching career in 4th grade with the majority, roughly 80%, of my class well below grade level expectations. By the end of 4th grade that percentage was completely reversed with 60% of the class reading ON grade level and 40% not. This year in 5th grade, I am so proud and blessed to say, because of the strategies provided; both in guided reading and in conjunction with using them in whole group, 90% of my class is reading on grade level!  Two of my ESE students, who started with me in 4th grade at a level J, are now at a level V-W. It is just outstanding the difference guided reading has made for my students. It has truly instilled in them a confidence and joy for reading that will continue to be essential to them and their success throughout their lives.
