Grade-Level Texts

I’ve heard teachers say that since their state has adopted the Common Core Standards, they can only use grade-level texts with their students, regardless of their instructional reading level. We must begin where the child is and ramp up their proficiencies by gradually increasing text complexity and reducing teacher scaffolding. “Think of it this way: If struggling readers spend their days in classrooms where only grade-level texts (or higher) are used, they are wasting most of their day (Allington, R.
