Literacy Tip of the Week: Week of October 25th

“Self-monitoring: When a student makes an error that does not make sense, does he or she stop? This is the first strategy I look for on a running record, and I frequently notice it is missing with struggling readers in the intermediate grades.  If the student does not realize that what is being said does not make sense, he or she will likely have poor comprehension. To prompt for this strategy, allow the student to finish reading the sentence and then say, “Did that make sense?” (Richardson, J.  2009. Next Step in Guided Reading, p. 46)
