The Power of Guided Writing

One of the most powerful aspects of my guided reading lesson framework is the integration of reading and writing. On Day 2 students have time to reflect on their reading and write about it with the teacher’s support.  Through teacher prompting students can learn to use what they know in reading to help them in writing. Dr. Clay said it best on page 138 of her book, By Different Paths to Common Outcomes: “Writing can foster reading competence and vice versa if the learner becomes aware of the reciprocal nature of these acts. Reading and writing can be learned concurrently and interrelatedly.” Harness the power of guided writing!
