Embracing Next Step Guided Reading

How can coaches help teachers increase their capacity to teach reading by embracing Next Step guided reading? Begin with a small group of teachers who are willing to try the "Jan plan." Do a book study with The Next Step in Guided Reading, watch the Next Step Guided Reading in Action DVDs, and encourage teachers to share their successes and challenges.  Ask the principal to support the initiative with leveled books and materials (magnetic letters, white boards, etc.) If you are doing a small pilot study, only purchase the materials for the teachers involved in the project. Each month, ask teachers to record students’ current reading levels on a progress log (such as the progress chart from page 297 of my book). When you see children not progressing, use chapter 7 of my book to analyze assessments and create an action plan.  Then share your data with the rest of the staff.  I firmly believe that teachers will change when they see that this new way works better!
