Challenge and Engage
Students should be challenged during guided reading, especially in light of the current emphasis on Common Core. If there’s nothing for you to scaffold, then the text is too easy. I caution teachers against adhering to a narrow quantitative approach for identifying a reader’s instructional level. Students should be engaged in a range of text levels during guided reading. It depends on genre, interest, background knowledge, vocabulary, and text complexity. Look for a text that gives you an opportunity to teach decoding, fluency, vocabulary or comprehension. Remember: Look beyond the level!
