Comprehension and Text

"Comprehension is a complex process that is taught through deep thinking about connected pieces of text. By engaging in conversations about texts that are a bit more challenging than those students can read without support, teachers help students develop the ability to think critically and discuss their reading. Similarly, inviting students to clarify their ideas in writing helps extend their thinking and deepen their comprehension."  (Next Step Guided Reading Assessment, K-2, Richardson & Walther, 2013, Scholastic, p. 13.)
