Prompting for Meaning
If a student ignores meaning (the errors are not meaningful but match some visual information such as (cat for cap), prompt the student to use meaning by saying, "What would make sense? Think about the picture. Think about the story." Additionally, I would recommend a more supportive book introduction where you have the student talk about each page. Finally, when you work with this student, I would have him or her to describe the picture on the page prior to reading the text. This will again encourage the student to use more meaning.
