Guided Reading and the Common Core Paradigm
I see guided reading fitting comfortably into the Common Core paradigm. Guided reading provides the opportunity to differentiate instruction for students who are experiencing difficulty applying the standard independently or for advanced readers who need to be challenged. Teachers could model the Common Core Standards during whole-group instruction using grade-level text. Then, if teachers weave that same Standard into a guided reading lesson, students would be able to practice the standard on a slightly challenging text with some teacher scaffolding.
